Butterflies & Moths of KY: Luna Moth
2015-07-29 - Edmonton, Metcalfe County, KY - Photo by Jane Todd. This luna moth landed at Geniece Marcum's feet and was easily tamed and held in her hand. According to the Wikipedia entry on the moth, it is common, but rarely seen. The moth itself, the entry says, has a very short life span. It does not have a mouth and does not eat - existing solely for romance, for perfect and fulfilled love - to mate and then die. It's the stuff of opera's if not country music. Can't tell if this is a boy or girl moth. Males have longer antennae. From other photos this one appears to be a male. As for Identification, this is the closest we could get - everything fits except for the color, which is described as lime-green, which fades from an intense color to very faint. If we're wrong, let us know using the contact button with this photo. (See: Actias_luna, the fascinating Wikipedia entry on the luna moth. - CM
