Kody Pelly was truly a person everybody liked
2015-07-31 - 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM. Kody Pelly's photo is now added below his quote in the Adair County Board of Education meeting room. He's the boy on the right in the blue shirt surrounded by fellow students. The late student (1990-2013) of the school system left an indelible impression on perhaps more people than any other Adair Countian ever, especially on those who knew him at Adair County High. He said, " everybody wants to be somebody" and Kody truly was. -LW

Master Plan: Adair Co. School District Campus: Bus garage a go!
2015-07-31 - Adair County School District Campus, Columbia, KY - Photo photo of Campus Master Plan, (c) Sherman Carter Barnhardt. The Adair County School District's long term strategy to reach what Supt. Alan Reed said was his goal when he took office: Kentucky's Most Beautiful Public School Campus" is evolving quickly, and took another giant step last night with the board's vote to build a new bus garage, located in the plat above in the lower left of the campus map. Architect Gabe Jones, with Sherman-Carter-Barnhardt outlined phased changes in the campus which, if carried out, might take 20 years to complete. The bus garage now officially underway, is in yellow, along with existing buildings. Proposed projects are in blue. The plan was unveiled last night, Thursday, July 30, 2015, at the Board's Special (special because of date change) Monthly Meeting. After the bus garage, the next major construction will be a "Learning Center," located across Indian Drive from the Adair County High School. The Learning Center will offer additional vocational training, and will be a part of the Kentucky Community & Technical College Systems (KCTCS). Also in the future Mr. Jones said: A new Administration Building, Phased replace of the Adair Middle School, with a shared Fine Arts building for theatre, choir, and band; New classrooms, and finally, a second Middle School Gym; a new octagonal concession center to serve both the football stadium and the softball field; demolition and removal of the old Adair County Middle School; a new soccer field; a new band practice area; additional classrooms for ACES and ACPC; a new maintenance building near the new bus garage; a new central storage area with the old 350 building being repurposed for locker rooms and the baseball program. Along the way, he said, modifications may be made to adapt to population changes, community needs, and availability of funds. - Ed Waggener

Gubernatorial Candidate Jack Conway in Columbia, KY
2015-07-31 - 203 Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM photo. Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Jack Conway posed with close friend Junior Stotts after most of the crowd which stopped in to support the campaign had left the scene. Conway, now the State's Attorney General, has close ties to Columbia. In addition to friendship with Mr. Stotts, his father is on the Board of Trustees of Lindsey Wilson College, and he was commencement speaker there two years ago. Among the visitors yesterday was George Kolbenschlag, who received an honorary doctorate from Lindsey Wilson at the same time Mr. Conway did. The crowd was swelled by Conway supporters from across the state. Among the local Democratic Party leadership in attendance were Party Chairman Ben Loy and Vicky Pike of the Adair County Democratic Party. Deputy CJE Holly Grimsley and spouse, City Councilman Charles Grimsley, attended and were warmly received, and Adair County CJE Mike Stephens made a brief appearance. The candidate kept security and logistics planners on edge, slightly overstaying his visit to Columbia; he had another big event scheduled for Bowling Green Thursday night. - EW

2015-07-30 - Cave Run Lake - Photo by Lee McClellan. Versailles resident Steve Reynolds fishes around a courtesy dock rendered inaccessible from high water at the Alfrey Ramp boat ramp on Cave Run Lake last week. Reservoirs like Cave Run Lake will release a lot of water from their dams due to the recent torrential rains. Anglers must adjust their tactics for success as lake levels quickly fall.
