Travel: Sand from up north
2015-08-01 - Siesta Key, FL - Photo by Pen. Some Gulf Coast sand isn't made up of the usual crushed shells and coral. According to locals, "a study of Siesta Key beach sand by Harvard University's geology department found that the sand was 99 percent pure quartz grains. Over millenniums, sand grains were carried by rivers from the southern Appalachian Mountains into the Gulf and down Florida's coast."

Long missed by CM readers Willis the Cat, lurking (daintily)
2015-08-01 - Photo by Sharon Whitehurst. "Willis the Cat lurks helpfully, stepping daintily through trays of lavender and foxglove, poking his whiskered face into my bucket of soil mix. He ventures out into the rain while I snip lank foliage, rummage for more pots; then he returns to the porch, shaking the wet from his tweedy fur, contorting himself comfortably into a cardboard flat meant to corral the lavender seedlings." - SHARON WHITEHURST
