Epicurean Kentuckian: an unfamiliar looking lunch

2015-08-02 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM.
First green drink off first juicer was a success, it tasted exactly like the juice of mostly green veggies, containing kale, tomatoes, cucumbers, cillantro, a fourth of a lemon and a green apple. In preparation for this feast in a glass, the shopping cart was filled with vegetables, a first, and then the kitchen cabinet looked like the produce section of the grocery store instead of a collection of processed foods. I read the directions, washed and set up the juicer – there are lots of parts! Next I washed and selected vegetables, going by the recipes at hand. The juicer sounded like a train coming through the house but it worked as promised and this glass of juice became lunch. Cleanup was another adventure, not a bit easier than cleanup of a regular meal. CM readers who are experienced juicers are invited to advise and send photos and comments to share! -- LW

Scrapbook from Mr. Hixson & Mr. Robertson: Important reveal

2015-08-02 - Columbia, KY - Photo from scrapbook now owned by Hixson & Robertson .
This page is the first one in the scrapbook which reveals the compiler's gender. It's "Miss" Vernon Rodgers. There are penned notes to her at the top of this photo, and, at the bottom the program for three act "The Path of True Love," presented at Lindsey Wilson Junior College, that May 10, 1935, with the cast. This is another page, bigger because of the neat foldout program in Miss Vernon Rodgers' Scrapbook 1934-35. - EW

Scrapbook from Mr. Hixson & Mr. Robertson: Graduation puzzler

2015-08-02 - Columbia, KY - Photo from scrapbook now owned by Hixson & Robertson .
It isn't clear whether the reception contest goes with the commencement - they're both on the same date, nor does this page of the 1934-35 Scrapbook compiled by Vernon Rodgers and now the property of Kevin Robertson and Barry Hixson say who the engaged mentioned in the "Floral Love Song" are. Maybe some reader will recall this milestone marriage in Adair County History and enlightened those who think they almost remember. It may or may not be related to the later commencement event May 24, 1935 at L.W.C. - EW

Scrapbook from Mr. Hixson & Mr. Robertson: Pressings, paraphernalia

2015-08-02 - Columbia, KY - Photo from scrapbook now owned by Hixson & Robertson .
Dried plants - hope someone will ID - and cigarette papers for "soft rolls" (as opposed to store bought tight rolls by the single or in a 20 pack of cigarettes of the day) were on one page of the scrapbook. In those days smokes were tobacco only, often from right out of the curing barn. From the scrapbook of Vernon Rodgers, 1934-35, now the prized possession of historians Kevin Robertson and Barry Hixson. - EW

Rooftops of ACES, on a foggy morn, 28 Jul 2015

2015-08-02 - ACES, 870 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
A scene some may be seeing from school buses after the Adair County School District 2015-2016 school term opens at 7:45pmCT, Thu 6 Aug 2015. This picture shows the roof line over the hill with a view of woods and farmland beyond. Larry Smith of Radio Station 99.9 FM, the Big Dawg, religiously counts the fogs in August to know how many snows there will be in the coming fall and winter. Not all snows translate into school snow days, but many will. Coincidentally, the photo above taken at 7:42amCT, on 28 July 2015, about the same time some busses might still be arriving on campus.

Thoroughly Modern Hailey: Retroesque look

2015-08-02 - Shelby County, KY - Photo by Pen .
The demure miss look is only one of a range of a thousand faces this little girl can pose. She's a as much into science and math as she is into being pretty. The outfit and the hat did come to mind seeing the Little girl clipping in the Old scrapbook from Mr. Hixson & Mr. Robertson, which was compiled by Vernon Rodgers. The little girl's face in that picture, evoked for an unbiased, impartial granddad the face of yet another granddaughter, a very Chelf-ish Tillie. - Granddad, Ed Waggener.

Scrapbook from Mr. Hixson & Mr. Robertson: Little girl clipping

2015-08-02 - Columbia, KY - Photo from scrapbook now owned by Hixson & Robertson .
Among the clippings in the 80 year old Scrapbook was this one of a demure little girl in a precious outfit, carefully posed for for what? A product logo? A greeting card? Whatever it attracted the attention of Vernon Rodgers for a 1934-35 scrapbook, now owned by Kevin Robertson and Barry Hixson, who recently bought it at an auction.
