Twelve teams of horses & mules at HGR Plow Days 2016
2016-04-24 - Homeplace on Green River, 5807 New Columbia Road, Campbellsville, KY - Photo By George Kolbenschlag, HGR photo. Twelve teams of horses and mules practiced their skills at Saturday's Homeplace on Green River plow day and spring festival. The large crowd at the festival also had an opportunity to see many of the skills from the early pioneer days at the farm which was first settled in 1803. There was butter making, horse shoeing, pioneer reenactment, ox cart rides, leather working and many friendly animals of all sizes. Homeplace is a 200 acre historic farm being restored to help preserve the areas rich agricultural heritage. In March, the Kentucky Senate passed a resolution naming Homeplace "Kentucky’s Outdoor Classroom."

Tyler Wilson demonstrates Horse Shaving at 2016 Plow Days
2016-04-24 - Homeplace on Green River, 5807 New Columbia Road, Campbellsville, KY - Photo By George Kolbenschlag, HGR photo. Tyler Wilson demonstrated "horse shaving" at Homeplace on Green River's 2016 Plow Day and Spring Festival, Saturday, April 23, 2016. Horse shaving is an old skill involving shaping wood. Tyler is from Adair County and was part of a display set up by Warren Wolf that included stone carving and wood working. The festival featured horse and mule plowing teams, but also included lots of farm animals of all kinds as well as some more exotic animals including zebra. There were also many demonstrations of the skills practiced during the early years at the farm which was settled in 1803. - George Kolbenschlag

Hills of Hardscratch: Summer like spring already
2016-04-24 - Old Glensfork Road, District 3, Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com photo. Locusts and Pawlonia hadn't reached their peak on Saturday, April 23, 2016, but there's great promise. What has happened is summer green over the Hills of Hardscratch. And things can't get any more calming or beautiful . . . a reminder of a sometimes remembered quote, "When God picked green for grass and trees, he couldn't have picked a prettier color." It's from long ago. Haven't heard it in 50 years, in days when God was always ascribed a gender. - EW

Perfect day for locusts on C.R. Jones Road
2016-04-23 - C.R. Jones Road, District 6, Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c). The showiest locusts today, Saturday, April 23, 2016, seemed to be on C.R. Jones Road. They appear to be just short of full bloom, so spectacular display may be evident for a few days. - EW. Paired photo. See: Locust lined pasture edge, C. R. Jones Road
