(AD) Primitive pie safe for sale 2016-02-19 - Edmonton, KY - Photo CM staff. Before refrigerators, before ice boxes, in early America there was the very important kitchen safe -- pie safe  -- pie chest -- cupboard, etc., which protected pies, meat and bread from insects. The doors and sides have metal design panels that allow air to pass through. The pie safe is primitive and has been in the Scott family and Scott descendants homes almost the entire time since it came from Dinwiddie County, Virginia, where it was probably created around 1840*, then brought to Kentucky in 1846 by newlyweds Cynthia Murphy Scott and Robert Winfield Scott. They settled in Edmonton, Metcalfe County, Kentucky, and raised their children who passed the pie safe on. This pie safe was picked up for appraisal by the Antiques Roadshow and taken to their Louisville show filming in 2007.  Appraiser Ken Farmer from Virginia, lifetime collector and seller of pie safes, gave insight that this safe was probably made around 1840* in Virginia, near the place from which the Scott family originated.
