Squirrel nest or something more nefarious, 2 of 2
2025-12-29 - Fairplay, KY - Photo by Veronica Arnold. Veronica writes, "Hanging from this tree, on the right side I thought I saw a large squirrel nest. Now I think it is some more nefarious ... Like a giant wasp or hornet nest. If that is true, one of this size likely needs more than a can of spray to safely remove. With livestock nearby and dogs running these woods, I would like it removed to protect people and animals. Thoughts?"

Kentucky Color: Weird Green
2025-12-28 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge. Billy Joe writes, "A couple nights ago, I took a picture of the half moon glow amidst the city-lit clouds. I immediately was confronted by the weird green shadows on the neighbor's fence. Didn't think much about it because my neighbor on my left has a green porch light.
But something kept pushing my, 'there's something I'm missing here' button!
I finally figured it out! Can you?"

Squirrel's nests are architectural strongholds
2025-12-28 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. Mistletoe, like that on the upper limbs in this picture, grows onto tree limbs, but squirrel's nests, lower left, are architectural marvels that hang on because they are built to. Materials used to construct them are twigs & branches, leaves and vines, human litter like plastic bags or paper, soft fibers, moss and grass, shredded bark and leaves, fur and feathers and acorns and nuts. The nest has multiple entrances.
