Lost? Are they yours? Horses wandering along Crocus Creek

2016-10-28 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Wendy Butler Burt.
The Fall weather is so beautiful that these five horses -- one black, one white, two chestnut, and dark bay foal -- seem to have decided to wander through the countryside near Crocus Creek in southern Adair County. Are they yours? They have been seen since Monday along Melson Ridge Road between Sullivan Road and Hwy. 704. Please come get them. --Wendy Butler Burt, wendy@crocusmillfarm.com

He's Everywhere in Cumberland County, KY: Joel Owsley Cheek . . .

2016-10-28 - Cumberland County Library, 114 Hill St, Burkesville, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com (c).
As well he ought to be. This portrait by Burkesville, KY, artist Charlotte Cash, hangs in the Cumberland County library, a destination respite well worth a visit. Seeing the portrait was a reminder of just how good his legacy coffee is today. I rediscovered it recently in Adair County, when the proprietor of major eatery gave away her/his secret. A cup Linda labelled "Awesome," and I concurred was made, the proprietor said, with Maxwell House. Wow! Starbucks couldn't beat it. For a lot of what one needs to know - not not nearly all - about Joel Owsley Cheek, see Maxwell_House Wikipedia entry. According to Find-a-grave (See: Joel Owsley Cheek is buried in Nashville, TN, a Cumberland River town like his native Burkesville, Cumberland County, KY. The library, like the Cheek's Maxwell House Coffee, is "Awesome." A sparklingly clean, friendly place, it offers great Wi-FI, and is staffed by some of the friendliest people in the world, and it's sandwiched between two of the finest restaurants around, Ruby Annie's on the Square, and Pat & Norman Hamilton's BBQ, on up Hill Street a bit, toward the Alpine. - Ed Waggener

MCHS Class of 1966 Reunion memento

2016-10-28 - Leftwich Hall in Bowling Park, 1608 West Stockton Street, Edmonton, KY. - Photo by Elaine Pruitt Wilson, event organizer.
For years Adair County Primary Principal Patty Jones, a graduate of Metcalfe County High School assumed that the man on the right, Ed Waggener, also completed his real education at that great institution. There was never any real reason to tell her otherwise. Actually, better than graduating, he discovered Linda Reid Marcum, his first (and only) wife there. He was editor of the Edmonton Herald-News, and she was the paper's most popular columnist, producing a funny and informative column, "School Scraps." The photo was taken at the Class of 1966 Class reunion, Saturday, October 22, 2016. -- EW
