Kentucky Deer Herd is beautiful; F&W wants to keep it healthy 2016-11-01 - Photo from Kentucky Fish & Wildlife. Kentucky's White-tailed Deer Herd is one of the Commonwealth's great wildlife assets, and the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife wants to keep it that way. Recently, bovine tuberculosis, an infectious disease which primarily affects cattle, has been detected in Kentucky's deer population. Wildlife officials in Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio recently launched a joint monitoring effort for the disease after an infected deer was discovered in southeastern Indiana.
