Crocus in bloom 1 Feb 2017 encourages one to keep chin up
2017-02-02 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Orissa Mora-Kent. This is a crocus bloom that my niece showed me this afternoon. (1 Feb 2017 - CM). I snapped this shot while we were outside soaking up the sun playing catch and tag. The bright yellow crocus stood out like a smile - almost encouraging one to keep one's chin up. - Orissa Mora-Kent.

Stately old Cedar on Edmonton Road takes on new face
2017-02-01 - Edmonton Road, Bliss, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. An old friend has a new look, a bit startling one for travelers approaching Columbia from the west on KY 80 - Edmonton Road. It's fairly easy to imagine it now as a bushy maned ogre, perhaps considering taking a bite of utility pole. From the other side, it appears that the tree's plastic surger is the result of wind damage, and that the "eye" of the face was created when the wind split the top of the tree and bent it over to touch the "nose." - EW

Birds of Kentucky: Cardinal and dove - not quite what it looks like
2017-02-01 - Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com photo(c). At first glance, it would appear the shy dove is waiting its turn while the cocky cardinal feeds first. But the whole frame would show two doves happily eating while the cardinal is hesitant to join in; sort of like the cat blue, now the size of a Greyhound bus, who is intimidated by much small cats, and still waits for us to protect his flanks and keep intruder cats away. -EW
