The Jim Blair Community Recreation Center (former Christian Life Center) in Columbia is looking better each day. As spring gets underway the half-mile walkway and lighting of the fields are updated and ready for use. The kids' play area is cleaned and plans are in the works to update and expand it. A Story Walk is being added. Pets are welcome and there is free WIFI. Parks and Recreation Board Chair Debbie Yates and Director Lisa Handy are leading the research and goal setting exercises so that it is a place of continuous improvement for families to enjoy. These three angels are a beautiful reminder of a wonderful idea, Columbia's Biblical Pictorial Gardens, at 70 Knifley Road, Columbia, KY, the brainchild of the late Allene McKinney Holmes and her husband, Sam Ed Holmes. It was too early in the morning to ask the usual history expert suspects, but re-reading this historical marker, I couldn't help but wonder, if Green County, KY, named for Revolutionary War hero Gen. Nathaniel Greene, ever had the third "e", and if so, when and why did it fall into disuse. The sign is on the South Public Square, at West Court Street, just off Main, in downtown Greensburg. It reads: "Green County, 1792, Description: Formed from parts of Lincoln and Nelson counties. The last of seven formed during first legislature. Named for General Nathanael Greene, who, in the Revolutionary War, commanded a unit at Boston, 1776; helped plan defense of New York; fought at Trenton, Brandywine and Monmouth. It may be Adair County's most iconic rural scene, the famed "Last Chance Grocery, Chance, KY." Once a fine dining place, where one could get bologna or cheese sandwiches, a soft drink or "dope," and a Moon Pie. Today, those heavenly comestibles are available, but only by packing a picnic for a delightful day trip, or conjuring it up in your mind. If you're from the 50's, the latter is inevitable. the scene is as much of an "Eat" trigger as a frothy cherry topped milkshake on the menu board of a fast food restaurant. We enjoyed an imaginary pickle dog & four square cracker sandwich, "fixed up" with hot sauce, a Double Cola, and a Moon Pie that way on Sunday, April 2, 2017, a day of vast Easter promise, when this photo was taken.
