The thousand word photograph 2017-05-21 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, columbiamagazine.com . This photo really does provide, as the old saying goes, a thousand words to help me remember this recent visit by our granddaughters and grand-dog and all that means to me. First and foremost are Hailey with her hand on the leash, at left, and Tillie with her hand stroking Churchill the dog's soft hair, and the nail polish on those sweet hands reminds me how fast the grandchildren are growing up! Churchill's story is that he's the first family dog in many years and where he goes, also goes his water and food dishes. In the picture, he hasn't noticed - nor yet eaten - the pink socks nor little girl's black shoes beside his dishes in the lower left corner. The socks and shoes go with the bare feet in the upper right of the picture. It looks like he is, however, considering taking a bite of Granddad's vest coat hanging on the daybed post at left, since at Churchill's tender age, everything he comes into contact with is a potential toy to be eaten or food to be tested. In the background are more stories, the spiral staircase that has been a good climbing spot for two generations now, and the little blue couch that my Mom, Geniece Marcum, felt we needed when she lived here and added to the decor of the house. The number of quilts under the girls suggests it's still one of the Kentucky winters, possibly dogwood or blackberry, and the covers are still out by necessity. The quilt draped in front has its own wonderful thousand-word story that my husband or one of his siblings will have to fill in -- it came to our house by way of inheritance from their mother, Audrey Chelf Waggener, and was likely designed and stitched by the hands of the women in one of those families either in the Knifley or Garlin sections of Adair County. - LW Comments? | Click here to share, print, or bookmark this photo.

KY 704 project completed by Stotts/Bowles team in record time II 2017-05-21 - KY 768 at KY 704, Adair County, KY. - Photo by Ed Waggener. Promontory Point, so to speak. The Hwy 704 water project is tied in but not turned on at the KY 704/KY 768 end of the line, and there were just a few pieces of equipment left along the line. Before water starts to flow as intended, the line needs only to be chlorinated, pressure tested and have samples tested before the system is utilized. A spokesperson for Stotts Construction Company, Inc, said Sunday that the company hopes to complete those tests Monday, May 22, 2017. The water will be tested at Fouser's Environmental Services lab at Coburg, KY. Dependent on those results the system could be online by as early as Wednesday, May 24, 2017. At that time, adequate pressure should be available for the growing area for a decade or more, if there are no significant existing leaks in the KY 704 portion of the line. Those would likely manifest themselves in an obvious manner in a very short period of time when the water flow and pressure along KY 704 is dramatically increased by the newly constructed Antioch-to-Piner's Place main. - EW. The painstaking long wait and the finish up in record time of the new, high capacity, sufficient water pressure line is complete at both ends, thanks to the Stotts family of Columbia's Stotts Construction, Inc, and David Bowles and Monarch Engineering, Lawrenceburg, KY. The completion occurred this past weekend almost simultaneously on both ends of the six mile project. Above, the newly constructed, the master meter vault, located in the Antioch Community on Sparksville Road, is now complete and will track water losses in water between this point and KY 704. The work is a celebration of the value of extreme competence, high standards of corporate character, and equally important, decades of knowledge and experience in the area. The work is standard for Kentucky's dream team in public utilities design and construction, and wins accolades and reciprocated appreciation in other areas; it is too often taken for granted at home. Family Fun in the Sun was a success early Saturday afternoon, May 20, 2017, before the storm clouds rolled in. The Martin family was one of first to enjoy the Story Walk, and receive one of the free books upon completion of the 25 stops around the half mile walk. The event was held to introduce new playground equipment and the newest Monarch Way Station in Adair County.
