The famed Big Tree at Vester, majestic in winter, too

2017-01-08 - Vester-on-KY 206, Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Marcum Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com(c).
For the tens of thousands of the Burton Ridge diaspora around the globe, to whom Vester is the center of the known universe, The Big Tree is every bit as iconic as the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, Lil Bertha's Place, Monument Circle or even the world renowned Begley Chapel and Adair County Courthouse Clocktower. A tree expert would know whether it is a "ranked" tree in girth or height. Maybe, maybe not. But if the memory quotient is factored in, what's happened under this tree certainly deserves top tier ranking in "The World Record Book of Guinesses," often cited by the late and great Mayor, Coy Downey. - EW. Photo windshielded by Linda Waggener, Saturday, 7 Jan 2017.

Trees of Kentucky: Sycamore tree seen through sunroof

2017-01-08 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Marcum Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com(c).
Sometimes, photographers need to remember that, even on the most fabulous days when there are billions of once-in-a-lifetime scenes needing to be documented at or near eye level, it pays to look up at the sky. Looking at the sky brings out the little kid in all of us. It's a little hard to lay down in the snow and watch the skies, the way a pre-teen can whiling away a slow summer day, but the sunroof on Linda's little Honda made a perfect chance to capture a sycamore at one of its best times. This one was in a photographer's paradise, Greater Gradyville, KY. - EW

The Whitehurst Diaries: Sweater Weather I

2017-01-07 - Sanders Ridge, Pellyton, Adair County, KY - Photo by Sharon Whitehurst (c).
Sharon Whitehurst remembered to document the beauty of this day with this photo, taken just as the sun was peeking over the hill, as nostalgia impelled her to write the diary entry for today, a distillations of past thoughts mingled with inspirations today's frigid for Kentucky - not for Vermont, where it's not 'frigid' until the F falls fully below 0. Photo Sat 7 Jan 2017.
