Going back through Columbia Magazine archives, I came across this black and white photo of Don and Barbara Franklin when we were all together at the John B. Begley Chapel opening at Lindsey Wilson College in 1997. It was a happy occasion supporting the college expansion and the good news for Columbia. Clicking this link goes to the story of Don's passing and the community's mourning nine years ago this week. Ed and I send our thoughts and prayers again to his family for the pain of having to give him up too soon. This wild mama turkey and her children were finding a lot of food for lunch in the massive field of new mown hay along White Oak Church Road. 2017 Adair County Fair: Schedule of Events 2017-06-08 - Columbia, KY. - Photo Jennifer Carter, . Thanks to some heroic efforts by the Adair County Fair Board, the fair's tradition continues uninterrupted. Using an innovative idea, which may even have advantages, the fair will be held three locations. 1) At the new Adair County Extension office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY. 2) At the Pavilion, in the old Fairgrounds, 413 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY. 3) On the campus of Adair County Schools, at ACHS FFA building, 184 FFA Drive, Columbia, KY. A location for amusement rides and a vendor is still being sought. One highly popular event, our Demolition Derby is still not set to happen. All times above are local. - EW. Observations: A lot going on on Greensburg Street 2017-06-08 - 200 Block, Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, Columbiamagazine.com(c) . There's a lot going on in this picture. Most obvious is that the reconstruction of the intersection at Campbellsville Street & Merchant/Reed Street will affect all parts of town, including Greensburg Street - so in the interim between the start of the Traffic Signal Rebuild on Monday morning, June 12, 2017, everyone, especially the natives, will have to learn their own shortcuts. The work set to continue through August 1. Secondly the Columbia Baptist Church Vacation Bible School is underway. Thirdly The sight of the beautiful old brick home is a reminder of a hope that this place matters, and that someone will see the value in its restoration. And The sight of the sidewalk: For too long, the City of Columbia has neglected sidewalks for decades. But now, finally, the meticulous work of the City Council's Sidewalk Advisory Committee, there is great hope that a safe sidewalk will finally be built from the Square all the way to the Adair County High School campus - although a deserved moratorium on Columbia street repaving to concentrate on sidewalks for a year or two won't happen, there is hope that, even as early as this summer, a four-tenths of a mile connector from the Joe Flowers corner on Greensburg Street can be constructed.
