When Adair County Emergency Management Director warned that the Columbia Gas Tranmission pipeline blow-off would be LOUD, it was a bit of an understatement. Old time residents have been used to the noise, some say the blow-offs occur about every four years, but in the area with so many newcomers it was bewildering and disconcerting, to say the least, when, with little warning from the company, the blow-off first sounded before being completed in about one hour. Older area residents remember times when agents from Columbia Gas alerted everyone, in person, in earshot of the event. Many say that the sound has changed over the years, from a higher pitched, shrill sound to the equally loud but more bass sound of today.
