The beautiful dog was showing signs of distress and disorientation in the extreme noonday heat, going in circles, limping now and then. Water was offered and a check of the collar by Lindsey Wilson College Wrestling Coach Myron Bradbury discovered s/he was not far from home and just needed a little help. Thankfully a friend came, offering a ride home to safety. Tiny dark red dots at petal base identify this flower 2017-07-19 - northeastern Adair County, KY - Photo by Sharon Whitehurst. This bushy wild plant in bloom, above the retaining wall where Mose Miller used to hitch buggy horses when visitors arrived, seems to be Monarda Clinipodia. The identifying feature of this one is the tiny dark red dots at the base of the petals -- more readily noted in my photo than when I was leaning over the wall with my camera. The terms 'bee balm,' 'wild bergamot,' 'monarda' are used inter-changeably by most of us. The leaves of all plants in this group have a 'minty' scent--some more than others. Can't help but smile at this volunteer Sunflower 2017-07-19 - Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, columbiamagazine.com. This healthy Sunflower popped up under Fay McKinley's bird feeder this season. A few seeds must have escaped the birds that visit the hanging feeder near her back door and this is a happy result.
