Burkesville Street Phase, Downtown Project - 24 Jan 2018 2018-01-24 - Burkesville Street & E Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. It goes in here and comes out there. Stotts Construction, Co. Inc. is threading sections of 8" pipe, in 20 ft. lengths, underground through a channel created with directional boring equipment. Above, Barry Stotts talks with Jimmy Branham, some 200 feet away, signaling when to pull more waterline through to his location by South Central Designs office just north of the Sav-A-Lot parking lot. When this section is complete, the directional boring equipment will stay in place, drilling another 200 feet of channel for pipe to a point south. The local contractor has already completed work along the 100 and 200 block of W Fortune Street, with minimal interruption to local traffic. The company has 180 working days to complete the project. Besides Barry Stotts and Jimmy Branham, others working on the project this morning were Joe McGeorge, Dan Lawhorn, and Billy Crews. A detour operation was conducted on Breeding Loop, from the most southern entrance at the Adair-Metcalfe County line, to the middle entrance to Breeding Loop, just north of Breeding Country Mart. The last of the snow that had halted activities and kept us all inside for two to three days, melted quickly when temperatures rose. Ed and I decided to go in search of the last of the snow and could only find it on scenic Patty Ridge Road in Russell County, in the ditch on the right, on the evening side of the hill where the sun had trouble reaching it. - LW. Day Trips are among favorite activities, discovering the beautiful countryside in south central Kentucky. In a perfect world, there'd be time in each state doing the same, but I'd always come back to the scenery of this region. We went looking for the last of the snow after the storm left last week as temperatures zoomed from freezing up to the high sixties over a matter of days. Almost all evidence of the storm was gone except for the thin ice cover on this pond on Patty Ridge Road in Russell County. -- LW.
