Columbia Fire Chief Mike Glasgow, now serving in his 49th year with the department, persuasively presented the departments case for assistance with the purchase of new turnout gear to replace 13 year old outfits and got a heads up to proceed with getting grant money and City assistance to replace a pumper next year. The council voted to provide $30,000 for the turn out gear and sanctioned efforts by fire department public information officer Donald Hare to procure a grant for the purchase of the new pumper, which, he said, will have a price tag of $375,000 to $500,000 and with a local share of 6.8%. The purchase will likely happen in 2019, Chief Glasgow said. ACMS Geo Bee Finalists - The National Geographic Bee is an annual competition organized by the National Geographic Society, designed to inspire and reward students' curiosity about the world. Students in grades four through eight (4-8) from 10,000 schools across the United States will compete in the 2018 National Geographic Bee for a chance to win college scholarships and the glory of being the National Geographic Bee Champion. Adair County Middle School's Geo Bee was held last week. The semi-finalists from grade 6-8 were, from left, Jimmy Winfrey, Ethan Coomer, Ryan Odd, Emily Phillips, Chloe Stapleton, Alannah Bowman, and Kiana McHolan. The top three finalists were Chloe Stapleton (3rd place), Emily Phillips (2nd place), and Ryan Odd (1st place). Ryan Odd, 6th grader, completed the State Qualifying test last week. This test will be scored and ranked with the scores of other students taking the test in our state. A handsome, very hopeful dog was greeting everybody coming out of the Columbia Post Office, about 3:30 or 4pmCT this afternoon, Monday, February 5, 2018. Eagerly followed each person toward their car, till it was obvious they weren't going to take him home. Then he waited for the next person, tail wagging. Wasn't hungry looking (yet?) and had a nice collar on, but no name tag. Anybody know him?
