Campbellsville Elementary kindergartener Lasca Martin enjoys lunch with Campbellsville Police Officer Ryan Jewel. CES hosts luncheon for law enforcement officers CES hosted a soup luncheon on Friday, March 16, 2018, in honor of all law enforcement officers. All city, county and state law enforcement officials were invited. Cafeteria staff members prepared a variety of soups, and teachers and staff members made homemade desserts. Officers were also given treat bags and cards made by CES students. They also enjoyed eating and socializing with CES students. - Calen McKinney

Historic Oddity du jour: re 1930 KY Sales Tax
 2018-03-17 - Columbia, KY - Photo submitted by JIM. In 1930, Kentucky imposed a progressive sales tax on retail sales. In July 1934, it was changed to a flat rate three percent and in 1936 was dropped altogether. One of stranger offshoots of the transition to flat rate was the (apparently short-lived) phenomenon of the sales tax card - in essence, a way for customers to prepay the tax. The image below appeared in a few editions of the News in late 1934. - JIM

Archeological find: Coffey House Cellar
 2018-03-17 - 500 Block Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. Searching for the entrance to Coffey's Cave, new owners of the Sales (Sayles?) Coffey Cave unearthed this man-made cellar, a structure of equally fascinating interest and great beauty, though it's size is quite small. Inside there is a vaulted ceiling, little else. The property is posted for now, but may be opened in the future, Junior Stotts says. - EW
