The Legend and the mural illustration by Pat Ritter and Charlotte Cash, perhaps the most famous muralist in Kentucky, inspire visitors to imagine a history of a great community and a great family and to visit what remains one of the nation's best kept secrets, Burkesville & Cumberland County, KY. The inscription reads: Jessie & Lizzie Coe purchased the Princess Ann style house through the Sears Roebuck Co. Catalogue in 1908, the first year Sears provided pre-cut kit houses. The purchase of the unassembled home was delivered to Burkesville on the Cumberland River, through town, and was assembled by local builders John Williams and Albert Cary. Members of the Coe family owned this house for it's first 54 years. It gained National Registry and KY Landmark Status in 2009. The Coe family has a connection to the family immortalized in Lynwood Montell's book, 'Saga of Coe Ridge.' Jessie's father owned a large antebellum farm after emancipation, the formerly enslaved blacks took the family's name and established a colony in the Kettle area in the southern part of the County. Included here are scenes from Burkesville/Cumberland County's history, including the town flooding before the Wolf Creek Dam was built, the first electric company, whittlers on the courthouse benches, the Coe Plantation, a church potluck gathering on the town square circa 1920s, the free ferry before bridges were built, and the construction of the road over the Big Hill.' It was hard to tell whether this donkey was protecting its territory or giving a welcoming case. Donkey whisperers might know. It might have been just curious. It might regularly pose for photos and has learned to enjoy the limelight. And then, maybe it was contemplating the role of his kind, in the Easter Season, on Palm Sunday - March 25 in South Central Kentucky - when Jesus made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, riding, Christians believe, on the back of a donkey. It reminds me of a Star Wars' creature about to burst forth with death and destruction rather than an earthly reminder of the renewal of life. At any rate, the blooming process is beginning in Flowering Dogwood.
