A for-the-record picture of our quickly changing Downtown - for the better. Work is underway to transform and restore another building in the Southwest Corner of the Square. Thanks in no small part to investments by community leaders, the City is living up to what former Mayor Pat Bell used to proclaim, "Columbia is a Happening Place." It's worth a trip to Columbia's United States Post Office on Easter Sunday just to see these newly opened flowers, whether one has a letter to drop in the mail or not. This photo was taken on Saturday, March 31, 2018 - and there wasn't time to ID it before sharing. They mean so much for the Easter season. By the way, for those of us who make a daily visit to pick up the mail, it's been great to see the increase in activity at the local office, now benefitting from an "Amazon" boom. And, we hope, from an increase in the use of "real mail." (After all, Columbia remains a major printing center.) For many of us, whether there's one handwritten letter in the our box, or it's packed with newspapers, bills, magazines, or there's nothing at all, whatever time we choose to visit it's always great to rekindle friendships, and it's a comforting social activity that keeps our world in place, in order. As the little pink marker sign reads in the window at 206 Public Square, Mary and Pete Davis have relocated their business to the other side of the Square and sold the building beside Harris Attorney's building to the owners of Nanwood Market who will be moving their business from Merchant Street on the other side of town onto the Square.
