The May 10, 2018 regular session of the Columbia/Adair Utilities Commission was had all members present, including Chair Wid Harris, lower left corner, who has had to be absent from some recent meetings. Around the table, clockwise, are CAUD Board members Doug Sapp, Junior Brown, CAUD Field Supervisor Jeff Wooldridge, General Manage Lenny Stone, and CAUD Board Member Mike Newton and Vice Chair David Jones. At left is Adair County Sheriff Harrison Moss, who randomly attends CAUD meetings, as well as when "noise" indicates a need for higher security. (Monitor at top of frame allows checks of activities around the parking lots and perimeter of building). Reports from Mr. Stone included slow but positive progress on the utility's natural gas distribution plans, with more potential customer and supply interests; excellent operations reports, including the systems readiness to combat algae bloom in Green River Lake, successfully handled in 2017 following Member Doug Sapp's insistence in the fall of 2016 that the utility be prepared for annual, predictable occurrence, and new protocols made the water taste so good last year that customers didn't notice what had taken place in the lake. Reports from the Water Plant, Wastewater Plant, and Financial Reports were also given. David Bowles, CEO and Chief Engineer for Monarch Engineering reported on another CAUD undertaking so competently and untrusively nearing completion by Columbia's Stott's Construction company - the Burkesville Phase of the Downtown Project - which it is being completed without all the attention it deserves. Mr. Bowles said he expects the project will be complete, and in use in June of 2018. The Pawlonia Trees in South Central Kentucky are in bloom now. They dominate some roadsides, particularly along the one mile stretch south of the Green River Bridge on the Heartland Parkway/KY 55 in Taylor County, KY at this time. This one, above, is from a photo simply for the record taken Thursday, May 10, 2018 near the Antioch Neighborhood of Greater Sparksville, KY. We pay homage to the tree because the lavender of the blooms were the favorite color of a great beautiful woman, the late Addie Turner Leftwich, who loved local travels, and particularly enjoyed a drive from Bellview in Metcalfe County to Glasgow along the old KY 80/Glasgow Road, where the trees at this time of year provided the main topic of conversation. Today, many see the trees as invasive, but, according to the entry in Wikipedia, Paulownia one variety of the tree, Paulownia Tormentosa once occurred naturally in North America. "Plan A consisted of quartering some of last years apples and planting them directly into the ground where I wanted trees to grow. Woodland creatures thwarted my plans by finding every hole I had dug but one. . . .and eating all the seeds. Plan B was started a week ago on a return trip to where I knew a grove of Hedge Apple trees had produced apples last Fall. Adair Fiscal Court makes progress on Rollen Coomer Rd Bridge 2018-05-10 - Johnson School Road, Gadberry-Fairplay, Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. Adair County Fiscal Court gave four approvals, in its regular 10 May 2018 session, to paperwork necessary for this "ugly bridge" on Rollen Coomer Road, just off Johnson School Road in Magistrate Sammy Baker's district. Construction of the bridge will be done by the Adair County Road Department. The bridge is "ugly" because of its three ton weight limit, and made a national list of "ugly" bridges, according to Charles Marshburn, one of the residents on the road.
