A reminder to visit the Julia Miller Horton Rose Garden
2018-05-28 - Trabue-Russell House - TRH - 201 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. Maury Lewis reminded CM staff and readers to be sure to see the roses at the Trabue-Russell House. This photo was taken last week, before the rains came. We haven't seen them in a few days, but a Memorial Day visit is encouraged to check the roses and to see more flowers on the other - south - side of the community treasure, there to encourage the Monarch butterflies. Thanks to the wonderful Adair County Garden Club for taking on this challenge. - EW

Let's go snorfeling says five-year-old Reid Crawford
2018-05-28 - Florida - Photo from family collection. Reid Crawford's concerns over his dad building a man cave in their basement got put on hold so he could take his family on vacation where he could 'snorfel," as he says. His dad had an official Fireman’s calendar and Reid counted down the days to vacay all by himself. He is the five-year-old son of Andy and Amanda Crawford of Glasgow. He is the grandson of Tommy and Tammy Crawford of Glasgow, and Tim and Debbie Sherfey of Temple Hill. - Jane Todd

Bro. Raymond Martin and the true meaning of Memorial Day
2018-05-28 - VFW Post 6097 - 500 Green Hills Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Gale Cowan. "I caught this photo at the VFW Post 6097 Memorial Day Service today, Sunday, May 27, 2018. The program was over and everyone was just standing around talking. I just happened to look over and saw Bro. Raymond Martin saluting the American Flag. This is someone who understands the true meaning behind the holiday that most people just think of as a day off work and a long weekend. Please stop and think of the great sacrifice so many gave for our freedom. Thank you for your service Bro. Raymond Martin and all others who served and are still serving today." - GALE COWAN

VFW Quartermaster Ronnie Holt, right salutes the United States Flag. There wasn't a dry eye in the house afterward. - EW

VFW Post Commander Joe Hare emcees 2018 Memorial Day Service
2018-05-28 - VFW Post 6097 - 500 Green Hills Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. VFW Post 6097 Commander Joe Hare was the emcee of the first-ever Memorial Day Service in the new building. In a somber, tearful moment, he related an incident which had been discovered earlier at Haven Hill Cemetery, where someone had taken up and broken the staffs of approximately 100 flags which had been place on Veterans graves there by the Columbia Masonic Lodge and placed in a pile at the entrance to the cemetery. "Somebody is very disrespectful," he said, choking back tears, "It's sad." - EW

Historic Day: First Memorial Day service at new VFW Post
2018-05-28 - VFW Post 6097 - 500 Green Hills Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com. It was perhaps the most moving Memorial Day service in the history of VFW Post 6097, which began inside the comfortable new VFW Post building and then moved to the outdoor ceremony, above. The occasion was well attended, with an estimated crowd of 75-100 coming as guests plus participants in the ceremony.
