Early Barbie dolls

When I was a little girl, before the official dolls were available to me, young ears of corn, like these pictured, made perfect Barbies. The long blond corn silks were brushed back, eyes, eyebrows, nose and lips were colored on and suddenly there was Barbie. The shape of the body wasn't the Barbie-extreme, but with plenty of imagination, it worked fine. After play time, the hair would begin to dry out and the make shift doll would be shucked and fed to the horses. - LW

It took a village to restore historic building

Hours and days and weeks of work went into the restoration of Nanwood Market on the Public Square in Columbia. This view is of last minute work going on before the ribbon cutting ceremony Friday, 6 Jun 2018. Work had to be done around the many well wishers stopping in with questions and support, excited to see this hopeful operation. The feeling that results from seeing this type commitment was put into words beautifully by Jane Smith who is on the Columbia Public Square daily in her work at the Bank of Columbia, "...It makes me smile to drive around it and see lights glowing in the windows at sunset or "We're open" signs instead of blank windows staring back at you. So glad there are people that have a vision and are willing to take the chance at small town business..." - LW

Linda Bailey helping share her neighbor's message

Linda Bailey works next door to Nanwood Market and said at the ribbon cutting celebration that wearing the logo of her neighbor is her way of supporting the business. With the Nanwood restoration, three historic buildings in a row on the square are looking great. Linda works with Harris and Harris law firm and her husband Danny is part of Red Brick Studios. Both of those buildings were refurbished by Mike and Laura Harris. - LW
