Time was, roadside gleaners would have seen the heavy, glistening elderberries of mid August as an exciting, free edible for jams, jellies and winemaking. Time was when gatherers drove the roadsides when the huge elderberry blossoms made spotting the plants easiest, marking locations in anticipation of the mid-August to mid-September harvest.
