Larry Reliford, CEO of LR Dozing, recognized something special while preparing Bobby & Euline Bowe's 1.4 acre site on Bomar Heights for commercial development: A check drawn on a Louisville bank just a few days shy of 75 years ago. It is made out to "Col (or Cal) Car Servis," and is drawn on a Louisville Lohrville, IOWA bank, and is a payment for "gas", which must mean it was for a truck or a payment on "put that down" account. It's signed "J.C. Blair." And one might wonder whether the signature is of an ex-pat on a return visit to Columbia, or one of the Adair Countians who established Iowa - and had returned home to enjoy a fortune earned there. Of course is does boggle those of us with lesser minds with another question, "Where was Columbia Car Service," and who ran it, and how might the check have ended up on the property? And where is/was Louisville, Lohrville, Iowa??? And whatever happened to the greatest invention of all times: The FREE counter checks banks passed out? The flower is Coxcomb and this dark maroon color is the most common of several colors that can be found. It is a late summer to early fall bloomer and it has the appearance of velvet in texture. Its shape calls to mind a human brain on a stick, or some say it looks like a deep red cauliflower.
