Area Business: New Dollar Store is open in Esto, Russell Co., KY

2018-09-09 - Intersection of Hales Highway & KY 92, Russell Co., KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
For the all important villages out-in-the county, getting a discount variety store can mean the long time difference between which communities thrive, and which shrivel into ghost towns. Esto, Russell County, KY, has been a winner in the past few days, and is already undergoing something of a boom period. There are occasionally losers - older general stores in communities which are in the path of the DG marketing juggernaut - but in Esto, that is not the case. Winners will be, one would think, nearby churches, the town restaurant already in place and maybe new ones at the crossroads, close by golf course, local residents who don't like to drive to a big box for a gallon of milk or a dozen eggs, and entrepreneurs whose busineses wouldn't have to compete. The new store is very close to the Russell County Airport, and is within biking and horseback rides from the big Dollar Market in Jamestown, and maybe a little closer, in time, for motorists to the new consolidated Russell County Library than for some residents of Jamestown, itself. - EW.
