Election 2018 reflections: board members over write-in votes

The Adair County Board of Elections members gathered for the last hour or more of vote counting to approve or reject each write in vote as it came on the screen. A photo/scan was made of each, so it looked very possible to tell the intent of the voter. As a matter of fact, it was easy to read the two or three votes Donald Duck received, two for Santa Clause and also a couple for Billy Joe Fudge! It could have been humorous except for the exhausted staff who'd been working since 5amCT and it was now about 9pmCT - and the tired media waiting to report the final totals, one of whom said, "write-ins should be illegal."

Birds of Kentucky: Great Egret

One of a trio of great egrets fishing along the shores of Lake Shelby yesterday.
According to the Wikipedia entry on Ardea alba, "In North America, large numbers of great egrets were killed around the end of the 19th century so that their plumes could be used to decorate hats. Numbers have since recovered as a result of conservation measures."

Election 2018 reflections: Payne family waits together

At the end of the vote counting, Sharon Payne, center, would win her race for Columbia City Council. As a matter of fact, she would get the most votes of any candidate for City Council. She was joined Tuesday evening by her brother George, left, and sister Phyllis, at right. George came in just shy of winning his bid for School Board.
