Peanut, the Hoosier hard maple

2018-11-10 - Indianapolis, IN - Photo by Beth Cravens.
One of my favorite things about fall is the vivid color of the hard maple tree. My dad, the late Paul Cravens of Sano, KY, was determined to have hard maple trees in his Indianapolis front yard. He always preferred this particular maple because of the beautiful fall colors, ranging from yellows to oranges and reds.

Approximately 55 years ago on one of his many trips down home he was on a mission to find two hard maple trees. He found one 5 ft tree at the Cravens family farm in Sano and another at my aunt Fay and uncle Peanut McKinley's old home out on Hwy 80. Both Kentucky trees were transplanted to his front yard in Indianapolis. He even named these trees. One was named "Peanut" and the other, "Ralph," after my uncle Ralph Waggener who had assisted with the dig.

Every fall when we look out the front window we get to see a little bit of Kentucky in our Hoosier front yard. We have the most colorful maple trees on our street, thanks to Paul Cravens.

Veterans are being honored this weekend in Adair and surrounding counties and the landscape is changing from pumpkins to the American Flag flying proudly. This happy pumpkin was part of the just ended Squarecrows season. Only a couple of them remain to be taken down until this time next year.
