Watson and Thomas lead annual history walk

Mike Watson, front left, and Dave Thomas led the 'Shot, Stabbed, Hanged and More' history walk around the Public Square Friday evening with a huge crowd of followers. The educational walk takes folks back into the wild years of early Columbia, the Civil War, and more. The unique walking tour highlights a few of the many incidents that have occurred on -- and off -- the Town Square, illustrating its rich history. Just as the title states, there were incidents of our varied past illustrated, some in graphic detail.

Epicurean Kentuckian: an old fashioned cake

This six-layer Apple Stack Cake made from historic recipe collections of Mary Anne Loy was part of the annual Fall Luncheon fare at the Trabue-Russell House. The recipe calls for the thin layers to be cooked in black iron skillets, with dried apples between the stacked layers. It includes sorghum which was an early sweetener. Years ago apples in season were dried in the sun so they'd be available in the winter for this cake and for fried apple pies.
