Adair County Teacher Evelyn Hughes remembered 2019-02-12 - Adair County, KY - Photo from Hughes family collection. Teacher Evelyn Hughes kept albums containing school pictures many of her students had given her. Her nephew Sammy Hughes, teacher at Adair County Middle School, brought them to a recent meeting of the Adair Heritage Association at the Adair Public Library. She was the youngest of seven children born to Samuel Zack Hughes and Effie Staton Hughes of the Rockhouse Bottom/Crocus areas of Russell and Adair Counties. Sammy Hughes said there was a lot of Native American heritage on the Staton side, Evelyn's grandmother spoke Cherokee.
