Aerospace program at ACHS celebrated at Board meeting

2019-06-25 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
David Taylor and his wife Kristi proudly stood with their son, Nick, at the June School Board meeting where the high school's Aerospace CTE program was highlighted. Both Nick, a 2018 graduate, and senior Clayton Janes have received their pilots licenses after going through the program.

David, Allen and Nelda Taylor's son, remembered his own days at ACHS. He said he has a hard time believing that 30 years have passed since then - however their upcoming 30 year class reunion is proof that it has. He commented that he enjoys it when his former ACHS classmate, Pen Waggener, runs one of his Dad Ed's Around Adair columns from the 70s and 80s. He remembers hearing about many of those happenings at the time.

Interestingly, both David and Pen grew up to raise sons of their own who would choose the Aerospace programs at their respective high schools in Adair and Shelby Counties and cross paths at Eastern Kentucky University where pilots are being trained as fast as possible to address the shortage of men and women who can fill that job.

Edmonton landmark burns to the ground

2019-06-25 - Metcalfe County, KY - Photo by Jane Todd.
The "Hughes House" will live on in the memories of many of us but its stately presence within sight of the Public Square in Edmonton is gone. The two-story historic home played a big part in my family all my life - Mama and Daddy, Uncle Russell and Aunt Gin, Aunt Lois and Uncle Brent - all in and out enjoying their lifetimes on the corner by the Edmonton High School. And most famously, the Hughes Cafe by the house, with its sign that read, "Eat with us if it kills you, we need the money." The little restaurant is long gone. The old High School is long gone, and now this last landmark is gone from the hill. Had to drive by on my way to work and see if what I'd heard could be true. It really did burn to the ground and is still smoking. - Jane Todd

Four-year-old Hudson Conover chose his favorite decoration hanging among the colorful window display at Nanwood Market on the square. In the blue shirt is big brother Jaxson, next to him is their uncle Caleb Irvin. Hudson and Jaxson are the children of John Aaron and Jess Conover of Columbia, part of the family that renovated the historic building on the square.

These pretty lavender violets are getting stronger every day, just as I am. It was a hard winter and spring for both of us, but we're celebrating life on McKinley Lane! - Mitzi
