Birds of Kentucky: Eastern Kingbird

All About Birds says this about the Eastern Kingbird (Tyrannus tyrannus): "The scientific name Tyrannus means 'tyrant, despot, or king,' referring to the aggression kingbirds exhibit with each other and with other species. When defending their nests they will attack much larger predators like hawks, crows, and squirrels. They have been known to knock unsuspecting Blue Jays out of trees."

Morning at Coomer's

By 7:30amCT, the morning ROOK games at Coomer's Trading Post had already ended. All that was left was the boasting. Louie Loy, left, is a regular at the country store and besides his reputation as card shark and "leader of the pack", he also enjoys the country ham and sausage and biscuit. Pictured to the right is local Nick Lewis who picked up a to-go breakfast before heading to work.

GR Animal Shelter staff honored for good work

Tammy Campbell and Roger Firkins were awarded WAIN Radio’s hometown hero designation recently for always going above and beyond in their work at the Green River animal shelter, matching animals with forever homes. The Green River Animal Shelter (GRAS), 455 Appleby Dr, Columbia. They are open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10am-4pmCT and on Saturday from 10am-2pmCT. GRAS is closed Monday, Thursday, and Sunday. For more information call (270) 385-9655.
