Cattails in a marshy ditch

Cattails emerge every year, seems like for infinity. They look sleek like this brown velvet one until time for them to turn into puff balls.

Cooking down the molasses

Dennis Whitlock, at left, and his son Adam Whitlock are pictured "cooking down" the molasses on a recent hot October day. Phillip Coffey's poem was inspired here, "...The smell of the brewing has cut off my stewing..." as he helped out. The juices that arrive from the mill, thanks to gravity, go into the vat on the right. The sugar cane juice flows through various cooking trays, getting skimmed as each is heated. Each step is cooked on down and thickened. When it gets to the last vat, beside the chimney at left, Dennis decides when the molasses are perfected and ready to pull the lever that will release them to the flow of the golden, thickened liquid into its bucket. Dennis said he learned this craft from his wife Stella Matney's father.

The Sugar Shack at the Whitlock's place

Molasses making starts with the sugar cane stalks

Making molasses in this region begins in the cane fields, bringing in a wagon load of the stalks for pressing out the sugary juices. Aaron Whitlock, at left, and his sons, Atticus and Lucas, work with Rev. Dennis Penick at the mill squeezing out the juices. The juice gravity flows to the Sugar Shack for the next step.

Big changes happened on the Square in 1945. An ad from April 11, 1945, at right, announced the opening of J.C. Marshall's Furniture Store. An ad from October 17, 1945, announced the opening of his brother Paul Marshall's Variety Store.

Going to Graceland

Explorers from the Columbia Magazine family shared reports from all directions of fall break travels. West Tennessee was the choice for Patty Edwards, owner of Liberty Road General Store and Diner. She visited Graceland, home of Elvis Presley, the King of Rock 'n Roll.
From Wikipedia, "Graceland is a mansion on a 13.8-acre estate in Memphis. His daughter Lisa Marie has been the owner since his death in 1977. Graceland is located at 3764 Elvis Presley Boulevard in the vast Whitehaven community, about 9 miles from Downtown and less than 4 miles north of the Mississippi border. It was opened to the public as a museum on June 7, 1982. The site was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on November 7, 1991, becoming the first site related to rock and roll to be entered therein. Graceland was declared a National Historic Landmark on March 27, 2006, also a first for a rock singer. Graceland is the second most-visited house in the U.S. after the White House, with over 650,000 visitors a year."
