Kentucky Color: HGR American Chestnut Conservation Orchard

2021-01-07 - Taylor Co., KY - Photo by Lyn Stanton, Program Director at Homeplace on Green River.
By Billy Joe Fudge

This is the first planting of the American Chestnut Germplasm Conservation Orchard at Homeplace on Green River. In partnership with the Kentucky Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation, your Homeplace on Green River is working to preserve local genomes of pure American Chestnut from survivor, local trees or local root collar sprouts, into research orchards.

I will be making more posts to keep everyone updated concerning this important effort. And yes, these first 13 seedlings are from three different crosses on the Charles England, Bull Run, Adair County, surviving American Chestnut!

Any rainbow will do

2021-01-06 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
I'll take my rainbows anywhere I can find them. Even at the carwash in a moment of late afternoon winter sun, they still make me smile.

2020 was a year of added worries in a pandemic

2021-01-06 - Taylor County, KY - Photo from Campbellsville Fire-Rescue.
Campbellsville Fire-Rescue Chief Chris Taylor said in his annual report on 2020 that, "This year I worried... A lot!

"I worried about our budget. I worried about layoffs. I worried about the safety and health of our staff.

"We have been very fortunate with no major health issues this year. We started very early on preventive measures, I strongly believe our aggressive preventive measures kept us safe from spreading COVID inside CFD.

"We were also fortunate to not have to lay off any employees during the pandemic. Our budget did suffer some this year, but we were fortunate to spend over $195,000 in grant money this year for needed fire and rescue projects!"

Campbellsville Fire-Rescue is comprised of 10 full-time, 7 part-time, and 43 volunteers.

Columbia Magazine is proud to share the works of first responders in Adair and all six surrounding counties.
