Kentucky Color: New Friend

2021-12-02 - Great Wooded South - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge.
By Billy Joe Fudge

The really great thing about traipsing over hill and dell in the Great Wooded South is the new friends you can make. While taking a break from cruising timber on the north slope of the Leatherwood Creek watershed, this young male bovine walked right up close to introduce himself. I said, "Hey big boy, what you doing?" He replied by continuing to chew his cud in the most calm and collected manner.

For quite a spell we continued the conversation with non-verbal glances and benign, physical posturing. Finally I stood and explained that I had a prior appointment and would have to depart. He seemed to understand.

As I departed, I turned to see him with half his harem following at a distance as if they were wishing me safe travels. I'll be back in his neighborhood on Friday. I hope he stops by for a chat.

Signs lining up for a severe winter

2021-12-02 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Billy Rowe.
If all the signs that nature gives us about winter come true, this season could be the worst one most of us have ever seen. By far the biggest mast crop I have ever seen - persimmons have nothing but spoons in them, animal coats are extra thick, and the real evidence for you to see with your own eyes is this wooly worm I spotted that is almost 3 inches long, 3/4 inches wide and black as the ace of spades. Hold on folks it could be a long and wild ride before it is over.

Kaleb Butler named honorary Adair Firefighter

2021-12-02 - Adair County, KY - Photo from Vicky Pike and Glenda Butler.
Friday, November 26, 2021 the Columbia-Adair County Fire Department had a special visitor, Kaleb Butler, at right, the 22 year old son of Billy and Glenda Carroll and the late Bobby Butler.

He graduated in 2019. He loves going to church, listening to music, collecting Pokemon cards and watching YouTube. Kaleb is also very intrigued with the Fire Department, he came down for a visit and the department surprised him by making him an honorary Firefighter. Thank you to Brandon and Ashley Harvey of Breeding Fire Department for coming down and helping make Kaleb's day.
