Anita (Torbert) Steigerwald, 102, Adair Co., KY (1916-2018)

She was a native of Madison, GA, and a former resident of Louisville, KY, and a resident of Columbia, KY, at the time of her death here. She was the matriarch of a prominent Adair County, KY family the mother of Georgann Flowers. She was the widow of first Gerald Jeff Thurmond, and later, George Roberts Steigerwald. She leaves seven direct living descendants. She was a member of Melbourne Heights Baptist Church and the Ruth Class.

Anita Torbert Steigerwald, 102, of Columbia, KY, formerly of Louisville, KY died Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at 2:08amCT, at TJ Health/Columbia.

Graveside service will be Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 11amCT/12pmNoonCT, at Calvary Cemetery, 1600 Newburg Road, Louisville, KY, with Rev. Adam Schnell officiating. Visitation will be 4pm-6pmCT/5pm-7pmET, Friday, September 14, 2018, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY.

She was born Sunday, July 30, 1916, in Madison, Morgan County, GA. She was the daughter of the late John Harris & Willie Mae Tappan Torbert. She died Wednesday, September 12, 2018, in Columbia, Adair County, KY, at the age of 102 years, one month, and 13 days.

She was married to Gerald Jeff Thurmond, who preceded her in death and later married George Roberts Steigerwald who preceded her in death in 1972.

She was a member of Melbourne Heights Baptist Church, Taylorsville Road, Louisville, KY and of the Ruth Class there.

Survivors include:
  • Two daughters - Nancy Thurmond Hays (Gene Hays) of Wilmington, NC, and Georgann Steigerwald Flowers (Jim Flowers) of Columbia, KY

  • Two grandchildren - Anita Jeane Hays Blye and Michael Roberts Flowers

  • Five great-grandchildren - Erin Simone Blye, Benjamin Franklin Blye V, Harriet Maxine Blye, Alexander Woodruff Flowers, and Cecilia Marie Flowers
