CIS Board of Education meeting 16 Jul 2018 -- REPORT

By Calen McKinney

Campbellsville Independent Schools will begin its new school year on Wednesday, Aug. 8, and preparations are underway.

Board of Education members discussed the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year at their regular meeting on Monday, July 16, 2018.

To help students prepare for the year, Board members voted to contribute $2,500 to the Site-Based Decision Making Councils at Campbellsville middle and high schools. The money will be earmarked to pay for school supplies.

SBDM members will work with Campbellsville Family Resource and Youth Services Center employees to coordinate purchasing supplies.

During last month's meeting, CIS Superintendent Kirby Smith announced that Campbellsville Elementary School students will receive their supplies for free this coming school year, to be paid for with CES SBDM funds.

At that meeting, Board members expressed interested in also helping CMS and CHS students with their supplies.

CMS students are given supply lists, though Smith said the materials required are less than what has been asked for in previous years.

There are no general supply lists at CHS, though students will be told what they need during their first day of classes.

School supply lists for CMS students be found online at www.cville.kyschools.us.

Superintendent's Report

In his monthly report to the Board, Smith said the District's buildings and grounds are being prepared for the new school year, and are all in good shape.

Smith told Board members that work is continuing on the concession stand and ticket booth at the CES campus, and workers are almost ready to install fences and plant grass.

He said the Board office was damaged during a recent storm, and repairs are being made.

CHS recently received results from Advanced Placement exams students took toward the end of the last school year. Of the 143 students who took exams, 21 passed with a score of 3 or higher, which will award them college credit for the courses. Overall, Smith said, 49 percent of students taking the exams scored a 2 or higher, which is quite an achievement.

Smith said he and the principals at CES, CMS and CHS are working to have vendors at upcoming open house events to provide the Hepatitis A vaccination, which is now required for all students to attend public school.

The District will host a Party in the Park on Monday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m., Smith said. There will be free food, games and t-shirts. Students and their parents can attend to have fun and fellowship with teachers and other staff members.

Academic Spotlight

Sue Crabtree, Family Resource and Youth Services Center director, spoke to Board members about her years of experience working for the center.

The center was opened in 1993, she said, and recently completed its 25th year of service to the District.

Crabtree, who will retire next month, said she began working for FRYSC as an advocate.

She discussed her memories of the school-age daycare program Eagles Nest, helping students and their families with clothing and teaching parenting classes.

Crabtree said last school year's FRYSC literacy tutors were very successful in helping students raise their MAP scores. About 90 percent of students who worked with the tutors saw increases.

She said she recently applied for the FRYSC office to be reconfigured as a Family Resource office and separate Youth Services Center, which she believes will provide more services for students and parents. She said she hopes to hear soon as to whether the application has been approved.

Maintenance and building costs increased last fiscal year, Kidwell said, but the District completed several projects, such as roof repairs at CMS and CHS, installation of fences at the CMS/CHS campus, upgrades to the CHS baseball field, the installation of security cameras at the CES and CMS/CHS campuses and more.
