The program, which was for kindergarten, first, second and third-grade students, was held June 4-29, 2018. Students learned about reading and math, and had fun during special programs with local community members. In the third week, students had fun with crafts, built with STEM blocks and learned to bake homemade pancakes. Students visited Clay Hill Memorial Forest and the Taylor County Public Library. Angie Freeman, expanded foods and nutrition program assistant at Taylor County Extension Office, taught students to make homemade salsa. Students also made bracelets, built sculptures with marshmallows and made wind socks. They made boats out of aluminum foil while studying density. To end the week, students toured the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort. Wings Express is a program to help students with homework and other activities. Students receive help with reading, math, science, technology, social skills and more. They also participate in activities to learn about nutrition. The program is free to those who apply and are accepted. During the school year, Wings Express students stay at school from 3 to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. There are no activities on Fridays. Students are given a snack and then divided into groups to participate in programs that best fit their needs. About 90 students participate in the Wings Express program. Doretha Sanders is Wings Express director. For more information about the program, call Sanders at (270) 465-4561. This story was posted on 2018-07-13 22:34:14
