Meyer Personal opinion of the writer Being a "Transplant" to Kentucky some 35 yrs ago, ticks and chiggers were something of a relatively new experience. Back then applying clear nail polish to the bite was standard treatment. Assuming the nail polish would smother the chigger, hence ending the itch. However. according to an old radio segment on Kentucky Afield, the chiggers really don't burrow into the skin, as we were told, they are more of a hit and run varmint. They bite, inject a sort of venom (really it is a digestive enzyme) and once the skin starts to ooze, they hurriedly lap up the fluid and are gone. Much like the hit and run driver that tags your car while you are in Walmart shopping. The end result is the weeping welt that itches beyond anything imaginable. Back then applying nail polish to the bite was a bit masochistic. The sting of wet nail polish to an open wound was a little more relief from the overwhelming itch of the chigger bite. As many before me, I have tried everything in the medicine cabinet to the cleaning products under the sink to no avail to stop the torturous itching bite, until stumbling upon a remedy - Aftersun Gel or Lotion! The simple been-out-in-the-sun-way-too-long, tried-of-barbequing-yourself, Aftersun Gel is available at almost any store that sells sun block or floaties. Just make sure it contains Lidocaine. This stuff is a life saver for any after bite itching including tics, skeeters and wasps. It won't take away the bite or welt, but it will take the itch under control like a lion tamer with a whip and chair! There is a word of warning. Once you shower, reapply immediately or the itch will resume where it left off; but due to the economical attributes of the simple Aftersun Gel, slathering this clear, affordable, absorbable gift of the gods on again takes only a few seconds to get a reprieve from the tormenting itch of bite.
