Mike Watson: QAL, Chiggers & a shower + trip to Dr. Loy's A life lesson learned visiting the grandparents place in Southern Adair County in the olden days - 1980 or so - when Adair County Historian was the victim of one of Queen Ann Lace's most horrible habits - being a vehicle for chigger-to-human transfer. . . Click on headline for complete story By Mike Watson Queen Anne's Lace - Lovely to look at, but I hesitate to touch! My experiences with this beautiful wildflower, abundant in our part of the world, are that they often allow chiggers to hitch a ride on their way to a human. In youth, we often referred to them as "chigger weeds" and avoided them at all cost. Of course chiggers can find their way to a person in many ways, but brushing up against Queen Anne's Lace, at least in my experience, was a certain way to get the horrible critters attached to you. One memorable experience with the dread chigger was about 1980 or so. I had gone with our uncle, William Watson, to look over the old farm where the grandparents had lived. It was a very hot, humid day and part way through the hike we sat for a few minutes to rest. Big mistake! I came home with a terrible case of chigger bites. I was smart enough to hop in the shower as soon as possible, but not having good sense, washed the monsters to about the knee. So, by nightfall I was beginning to scratch and continued to do so. By morning the only bites I had were from the knees down, but they numbered more than one hundred and by the end of second day I was a Dr. M.C. Loy's office for some relief. A shot and prescription eased the pain some, but it was literally two weeks before I was back to normal, wearing long pants, socks and shoes. So, I now avoid bearers of chiggers when possible, including brushing up against the Queen! --Mike Watson Comments re photo 79451 Wildflowers of KY Todays Special II QAL Visitor Combo This story was posted on 2018-06-26 10:04:25
