Safety in your home was the topic covered by Steve Jenkins

By Linda Waggener

Home Safety was the subject and Adair County native Steve Jenkins was the speaker at the June Chamber of Commerce lunch meeting June 12, 2018.

For over a decade he has worked in the security business in Somerset and he offered helpful information from his experience and studies that have been done.

He said that in the past break-ins happened more at night, but current studies have shown that break-ins occur more in the daytime now when families are outside of the home. He said the month of February is the least likely month for break-ins, while the months of July and August are the highest.

Other items he shared included:

- Thieves today are searching mainly for cash, jewelry, electronics and medicines.

- Keep shrubs trimmed, overgrowth around the home provides a place thieves can hide.

- Lock doors, do not hide a key outside. Thieves can spot the little rock that hold keys by the door, and other places where people typically leave extra keys. He suggested having a trusted neighbor friend or family member who has a key at all times.

- Never hide things in freezers, bedroom drawers, bookcases. Do use safe deposit boxes or an internal bolted safe.

- Keep curtains and blinds closed at night with lights on timers when you're away.

- Stop mail and deliveries when you plan to be away from home.

- Do not ever post that you are away from home on social media. Save your pictures and comments until after you return from vacation.

He said that new systems are very helpful, one system called a geo-fence allows you to monitor everything at home while you're away, and can be done all from your cell phone.
