Preventive maintenance projects set for Barren, Monroe & Todd

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is investing nearly $25 million into pavement preservation projects this year across the state. This is the largest investment since 2007.

KYTC District 3, Bowling Green, KY

BOWLING GREEN, KY. (1 Jun 2018) – Work is expected to begin on a set of preventive maintenance projects next week in Barren, Monroe and Todd counties.

The District 3 projects will start in Todd County on KY 107 from mile point 8 to 10 Monday and Tuesday. Crews will move onto to KY 1297 in Barren County Wednesday and Thursday from mile point 7 to 9.5. This roadwork will wrap up with KY 216 in Monroe County. All work is weather dependent and the schedule could change.

To increase the life of the pavement on these specific roads, a chip seal treatment will be applied. Motorists might notice some loose gravel on the roadway and increased driving noise following the treatment. These issues will improve with time and traffic volume. Other preventive maintenance projects in the district are scheduled, but details are not finalized.

Preventive maintenance is a proactive approach to maintaining Kentucky roads by using treatments beyond traditional asphalt. These treatments can last up to 60 percent as long as traditional asphalt resurfacing, but for 30 percent of the cost. This allows more roads to remain in good or fair condition as opposed to letting roads go into poor conditions that require a more costly repair. Preventive maintenance slows pavement deterioration, corrects minor surface distress and increases safety.
