Sports history made at CMS and CHS schools this year Many students honored. complete list of names, accomplishments cited is included in full article. Click on headline for the complete story. By Calen McKinney Campbellsville High School girls' basketball players were recently honored at a banquet for their hard work and dedication this season. CHS seniors Kayla Young, Vonnea Smith, Nena Barnett and Kiyah Barnett received the varsity coaches award, and were thanked for their time with the team. Young received the varsity leadership award. Smith and Campbellsville Middle School eighth-grader Bri Gowdy received the varsity defensive award. Rylee Petett, an eighth-grader, received the freshman coaches award. Abi Wiedewitsch, a freshman, received the junior varsity coaches award. She also received the varsity most improved, free throw percentage and leading rebounder awards. Smith also received the varsity 110 percent and leading assist award. Kiyah Barnett received the varsity field goal percentage award. And Gowdy also received the varsity three-point field goal percentage, most points and steals leader awards. Players were also recognized for their academic success this season. Those who received the academic all-state first team honors, earning a GPA of 3.75 or higher, include eighth-graders Rylee Petett, Kaylyn Smith and Lainey Watson, freshmen Kenzi Forbis and Abi Wiedewitsch and sophomore Katelyn Miller. And those who received the academic all-state honorable mention award, earning a GPA of 3.25 to 3.74, include eighth-grader Bri Gowdy and senior Kayla Young. The CMS and CHS girls' basketball teams made school history this year. The eighth-grade team won the Central Kentucky Middle School Athletic Conference tournament championship and the CHS freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams all won the 20th District tournament championships. With the District title, the CHS varsity team advanced to the 5th region tournament for the first time since 2002. Anthony Epps is the CHS girls' basketball head coach.
