Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Wes Irvin, AYDC School Administrator Adair Youth Development Center staff participated in a technology training on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, with presenter Frank Martin from Salem, OR. Mr. Martin's presentation was on secured laptops. Adair Youth Development Center is now the seventh juvenile facility in the nation to be chosen as a pilot program at no expense to the Adair County School District, Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice or to Adair Youth Development Center. The students at the facility are very excited to get this pilot program going so they can have more access to technology. AYDC wants to give a huge thank you to Frank Martin and World Possible.org for making this program a reality for our students and to the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice-Education Branch for making this possible. Through the affiliation of Frank Martin with the Center for Educational Excellence in Alternative Settings (CEEAS) and the involvement of the Education Branch through Title I Part D Subpart I funding with CEEAS Adair YDC was recommended by of the Education Branch as the most appropriate site for this pilot. What do secure laptops offer to students? Secured laptops - prepared with the Endless Operating System (OS), a Linux-based OS, along with RACHEL content and an array of opensource applications - is a perfect educational solution for those without access to computers and the internet. Six states - Oregon, Washington, Utah, Massachusetts, Florida and New York - have piloted these laptops. The piloted sites have been mostly secured youth correctional facilities. Each pilot site decides how to deploy ten pilot laptops and to develop their own process of rolling out and tracking. Usage has been in a variety of scenarios and settings - e.g., high school classroom teaching with a teacher, college-level courses for youth to access independently at any time in their living areas. Facility staff are trained on the operation and capability of the laptops, and the cultural shift towards greater student access of educational materials within the facility. To ensure security, the new student laptops are only connected to a proprietary docking station when transferring or updating content.Adair Youth Development Center is now the seventh juvenile facility in the nation to be chosen as a pilot program at no expense to the Adair County School District, Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice or to Adair Youth Development Center.
