Ellen Faye Cowherd, Taylor Co./Ohio Co., KY native (1928-2017)

She was a beloved Taylor County teacher who was very active in church and civic affairs. She had served on the local Soil Conservation Board. She attended Russell Creek Academy (Campbellsville College) and Georgetown College before receiving her Bachelor's degree from Western Kentucky State Teacher's College (Western Kentucky University). She went on to teach and retired from the Taylor County School System with over twenty-five years in elementary education. A member of Early Chapel United Methodist Church, she was active in United Methodist Women, the Order of the Eastern Star, Homemakers and had served on the Soil Conservation Board. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling on bus tours and going to Kroger. She was the daughter of the late Strather E. & Virgie Bennett Hunter and the widow of Theodore Cowherd. She leaves eight direct living descendants.

Ellen Faye Cowherd, of the Bengal community died Saturday, November 18, 2017 at T. J. Health Columbia, KY.

Funeral services for Ellen Cowherd will be held at 10amCT/11amET, Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at Lyon-DeWitt-Berry Funeral Home, 503 E Main Street, Campbellsville, KY, with Bro. Paul Dicken officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, 200 Block W Main Street, Campbellsville, KY. The family requests visitation 4pm-7pmCT, Tuesday, November 21, 2017, at the Lyon-DeWitt-Berry Funeral Home.



Serving as pall bearers will be Lane Cowherd, Kyle Cowherd, Steven Brockman, Jason Jones, Rebekah Cowherd, Robert Louie Cowherd, Joe Gupton and Eric Phillips. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Arnett, Mike Matney, Mike Elmore, Billy Willis, Barry Blevins, Joe Ward and Ernie Blough.


Ellen Faye Cowherd, 89, Taylor Co./Ohio Co., KY native (1928-2017)


She was born on October 16, 1928 in the Equality community of Ohio County, KY. She was the daughter of the late e Strather E. & Virgie Bennett Hunter. She died Saturday, November 18, 2017, in Columbia, Adair County, KY, at the age of 89 years, one month and two days of age.

She was the widow of Theodore Cowherd who died on August 24, 1996. A brother Austin Hunter and sister, Ethel Hunter, also preceded her in death.

Ellen attended Russell Creek Academy (Campbellsville College) and Georgetown College before receiving her Bachelor's degree from Western Kentucky State Teacher's College (Western Kentucky University). She went on to teach and retired from the Taylor County School System with over twenty-five years in elementary education. She is survived by:
  • Two sons: David Cowherd and his wife, Sherry of Campbellsville, KY; and Tommy Cowherd and his wife, Betsy, of Illinois

  • Five grandchildren: Carrie Gupton and her husband, Joe; Jessie Brockman and her husband, Steven; Kyle Cowherd; Lane Cowherd; and Rebekah Cowherd

  • Three great-grandchildren: Ella and Maggie Gupton and Theo Brockman
