LW Men's Soccer falls to Cumberland in MSC tournament final
Double OT loss, 2-1, before Joe Hood Field crowd of 100
BOWLING GREEN, KY - (Fri 10 Nov 2017) - The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team fell in the championship match of the Mid-South Conference Tournament to Cumberland (TN) 2-1 in double overtime on Friday afternoon at Joe Hood Field.
The Blue Raiders (13-3-0) led at the break after a late first-half goal, but the Phoenix (14-2-2), who were reduced to 10 men in the 74th minute, rallied back and found the equalizer in the 82nd minute, scoring the winning goal in the 104th minute to seal the title.
Lindsey Wilson created more of the chances in the opening 45 minutes of play, finally securing the opening goal in the 38th minute after winning a corner. Mutaya Mwape sent in a corner kick where it fell to Nicholas Marcano, who poked the ball in the back of the net for the opening score.
The Blue Raiders outshot the Phoenix 6-2 in the first half.
As both teams continued to battle in the second half, Cumberland was reduced down to 10 men after a red card in the 74th minute.
Both sides continued to have quality chances, but it was the Phoenix that found the next goal.
After a ball was served into the box and ping-ponged around, Cumberland's Markus Skraastad connected with a header, firing it into the back of the net to level the game in the 82nd minute.
By the end of the 90 minutes, Lindsey Wilson held the advantage in shots 13-9, including 7-1 in shots on goal.
Cumberland nearly found the game winner in the first overtime period, but a shot clipped off the post as time expired, sending things to a second overtime.
Lindsey Wilson's best overtime scoring chance came in the 101st minute, but Franck Bikoya's quick shot from 12 yards out was denied by the Cumberland keeper.
The Phoenix finally found the winning goal in the 104th minute when Patrick Crowley threaded a perfectly weighted ball through to Daniel Williams, who was able to beat LWC goalkeeper William Diaz for the score.
With the victory, Cumberland receives the conference's automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament. Lindsey Wilson is expected to receive an at-large bid into the tournament field. The bracket and Opening Round locations will be announced on Monday.
