Tanner Caldwell: working at Disney World was great experience Tanner Caldwell received his bachelors in business administration degree from Lindsey Wilson College in May, 2016, with an emphasis on management. He also signed up for the work program at Disney World. By August, he was at work as a Disney World employee in Florida. He shares highlights here along with a quote by Walt Disney, "All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them." By Tanner Caldwell My Time at Disney World Last year I had the opportunity of a lifetime, to go work at the happiest place on earth! It was such an amazing experience and I would tell anyone who has the chance to do the college program to go for it! At first I didn’t want to go but after a little bit of coaxing from my parents and professors I decided to apply. I didn’t get in the first time I applied but was able to on a second try. I have always had a love for Disney and I talked with other people locally who had done the program before and they said it was the chance of a lifetime and that I should apply. Once I found out I was going I was absolutely ecstatic! I couldn’t believe that I was going to work at Disney World. We left a few days before I had to be in Florida, just so we could get there and have some time for me to get familiar with the area. The first thing I did was check into my apartment. Disney provided the housing for us and I had selected to have random roommates which worked out great. The guy in the room with me was from Texas so we had a lot in common and got along very well. My other roommates were from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico and London, England. We all became very close and still stay in touch to this day. Over the next few days we were given our job positions and trained at “Disney University”, depending on where we would be working. My job consisted of working at two different locations but both were in food service. My first position included working in food trucks that they have at Disney Springs which was formally Downtown Disney. This was my primary work location but I was also trained to work at the concession stand in the Cirque du Solei show, also at Disney Springs. I had great coworkers and made so many friends while I was working at Disney. I also met people from all over the world which was such a neat experience in itself. I loved visiting EPCOT and getting to be immersed in other cultures. It’s always my favorite park to visit. My program was during the fall of 2016 and lasted from August 15, 2016 until January 5, 2017 of this year. The Disney College Program consists of three different parts; living, learning, and earning. They provide the housing for you and you can still take classes that go toward your degree all while working there and earning fairly good money. Some of the best parts for me included the perks that we got while working there. The number one perk was complimentary admission to any of the parks and resorts anytime that we wanted. Another great perk was a big discount on merchandise and food within the whole Disney area. Some of my best memories are of me and my friends playing in the parks all day and then getting to watch the fireworks over the castle each night. Disney fireworks never get old no matter how many times you’ve seen them. If anyone has the opportunity to do this program I would highly encourage it. You’ll get to experience things not many others have had the chance to. I definitely don’t regret it at all and I know you would love it if you have the chance to go! "All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them." -Walt Disney Tanner is the son of Kelly & Joey Caldwell of Columbia, grandson of David Louis Butler, the ownership family of Holmes Bend Marina.
