Remembering Garnett Kessler & Capricious Adair Co. Dairy Day

Dr. Gary Lane was young UK Dairy specialist when he faced off with one of the greatest human milking machines of all time, County Attorney O.A. "Cotton" Durham, in a milking contest. He recalls Garnett Kessler's role in the contest, and his hand in the Attorney Durham's decisive victory that day. 'He (Garnett Kessler) was always having fun,' Dr. Lane remembers fondly, and adds 'RIP my friend.'

By Gary Lane

Garnett Kessler will be missed by many.

He was fine gentleman and a good breeder of Jersey cows.

I am reminded of a time many years ago when Adair County would hold dairy day on the Square. There would always be a large crowd.

I was an extension dairy specialist at the University of Kentucky at the time and always took advantage of attending dairy day.

I graciously agreed to compete with the county attorney since I had a lot of experience milking Jersey cows.

I was a bit surprised when Garnett came leading two goats from an alley onto the trailer being used for a stage.

The county attorney and I stooped down to milk the goats.

Of course they had it rigged so the county attorney would win.

Garnett poured milk from a container in the county attorney's bucket so he had the most milk.

He was always having fun. RIP my friend. - GARY LANE
