Wendy Burt: Field turning purple are two related invasive weeds Invasive Eurasian plants are hard to difficult to eradicate. On the plus side, the flowers are attractive and beneficial to honeybees and a food source for birds Comments re article 89669 Sue Mullins Asks about little flowers in Robert Ellis photo By Wendy Butler Burt The flowers turning fields purple these days are two related and invasive weeds from Eurasia -- Henbit (Lamium amplexicaule) and Dead Nettle (Laminum purpureum). These weeds grow in open areas, lawns, fields, and waste places throughout the U.S. and, once established, are very difficult to eradicate. On the plus side, the flowers are attractive to both honeybees and various species of native bees and the seeds are a food source for birds. --Wendy Butler Burt Comments re article 89669 Sue Mullins Asks about little flowers in Robert Ellis photo This story was posted on 2017-04-01 08:56:46
